Time Is

for SSA choir and piano (2016)

One of the most known Henry Jackson van Dyke’s poems, Time is, attracted my attention by its profound philosophical statements which are expressed with such candor and simplicity, that it made the poem truly universal and timeless. The piece exists in 2 versions: version 2 includes additional text and the optional use of hand bells.

Program Notes:
One of the most known Henry Jackson van Dyke’s poems, Time is, attracted my attention by its profound philosophical statements which are expressed with such candor and simplicity, that it made the poem truly universal and timeless.
Originally the poem was written for the author’s friends, Spencer and Katrina Trask, to serve as an inscription on a sundial in their estate’s garden. 93 years later the poem was read at the funeral of Diana, the Princess of Wales and 99 years later (in 2003) it was chosen for a memorial to British victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
